The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on September 07, 2026, issued updates to the Guidelines for utilization of slurry generated from Marble/Granite processing units to prevent its unregulated dumping on land or in low-lying areas.
The following has been stated: -
•The CPCB has issued guidelines pursuant to the NGT’s directions in OA No. 164 of 2022 to prevent unregulated dumping of marble/granite slurry on agricultural land, low-lying areas, and unauthorized sites.
•The guidelines address environmental impacts such as contamination of soil and water and deterioration of air quality caused by improper slurry disposal.
•Marble/granite processing generates around 20–25% slurry by weight, containing approximately 35–45% water, with significant quantities generated annually, particularly in Rajasthan.
•Processing units are required to manage slurry through measures such as sedimentation, water recycling and dewatering, while promoting its utilization in suitable industries.
•The guidelines aim to ensure scientific handling, disposal and utilization of slurry and prevent environmental pollution arising from its indiscriminate dumping.
